NAYS offers tips to prevent violence between parents of youth athletes
National Alliance for Youth Sports hopes to make sure last week's tragic fight was the
                    last of its kind

In the wake of the tragic violence between fathers at a youth
hockey game in Reading, Mass. in July, the National Alliance
for Youth Sports is taking steps to try and keep youth sports
rage from surfacing in the future.

Here are ten tips from the NAYS for parents who take an active part in their children's athletics:

                   1. Remember that where teams practice and play games is like your child's classroom--respect
                    the classroom.

                    2. Make only positive, encouraging comments to the players on both teams.

                    3. Remember, making mistakes is part of the learning process--don't criticize.

                    4. Discuss your concern away from the players and, in particular, away from your child.

                    5. Respect the officials.

                    6. Focus on fun and participation rather than winning and losing.

                    7. Ask children if they had fun. Then ask why or why not?

                    8. Control your emotions.

                    9. Get interested in your child's sports.

                    10. Learn the rules of your child's sport.

MORE ADVICE FOR PARENTS
FROM DR. LAURA

1. Stay home if you can't control yourself or you get angry when kids don't play perfectly.

2. Be a better role model to your kids.  Kids look up to their parents and imitate them.

3. Don't nag your kids.

4. Commend your child for the good things they did no matter what results of the game or how they played.

5. If your child's team wins, compliment the opponents.

6. If your child's team looses, compliment the opponents.  Don't frown!

7. Celebrate all games, win or loose.  Concentrate on effort.

8. Remember, it's their game, not yours.

9. Don't make sports all-important.  Their are many more things in life.

10. Love and support your kids AT ALL TIMES.
